Officers Role and Responsibilities
As outlined in the VFW National Bylaws and Manual of Procedure the Post has Elected and Appointed Officers to help guide the Membership and conduct the duties and business of the Post.
Elected Officers
- Commander: Presides over all post meetings, acts as the Chief Executive Officer of the post, ensures operations comply with local and national laws, and appoints committee members and other officers.
- Senior Vice Commander: Assists the Commander and presides over meetings or events in their absence.
- Junior Vice Commander: Assists the Commander and Senior Vice Commander, presiding in the absence of both.
- Quartermaster: The bonded custodian of all post funds and property. Responsible for receiving funds, paying authorized expenses, maintaining financial records, and ensuring the post remains compliant with federal and state tax reporting.
- Trustees: Conduct quarterly audits of the Quartermaster’s books, verify financial transactions, and report the findings to the post membership and the Department.
Appointed Officers
- Adjutant: Serves as the secretary of the post. They handle correspondence, prepare reports at the direction of the Commander, and attest official documents.
- Chaplain: Visits and comforts sick or shut-in members and their families, and performs ceremonial duties for post events.
- Judge Advocate: Provides advice to the Commander on interpreting VFW National Bylaws, Manual of Procedure, and Post Rituals.
- Surgeon: Promotes health and safety programs for the benefit of the post and the wider community.
- Benefits Advisor: Assists veterans, service members, and their surviving spouses in navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and filing rightful claims for compensation, pensions, and rehabilitation.
